Will Young – Map
By JP Webber, Music on Posters editor.
What a strange idea for a poster – let’s get Will Young in and stick him in front of a world map, bound to go down a storm. Well, it is different, you can’t deny that. I’ve got to be careful about reading too much into this one, but here goes.
Since winning Pop Idol (in the UK) Will’s always insisted that he wants to be more than just a pop star – he’d like his music to be taken seriously. His record company seem to keep him under this illusion by occasionally letting him do something other than otherwise unashamedly pop tracks. Light My Fire stuck out like a sore thumb from the usual teen fodder, but it remains to be seen whether Will will ever come up with his own album of self-penned catharsis songs.
Looking through the range of available Will Young posters, it seems that something similar has taken place with the publicists. Most of the posters are pretty standard close-ups of Will grinning away and trying to persuade you to stick him on your bedroom wall. I think that this one was a concession to Will who no doubt wanted to do one that reflected his serious side. So they stuck him in front of a map that happened to be in the studio office and hey presto, one serious, almost arty poster.
Now whether they realised that he’s hovering over Europe and looking like he might be about to take a bite out of North America I very much doubt. It’s well known that British pop stars all hanker after the American market and that very few of them actually make it. If they’re trying to suggest here that Will’s about to conquer the USA then they’ve definitely lost the plot. Whatever they were doing, let’s hope it keeps Will happy while they cook up his next top ten hit.
