Vanessa Mae – Storm on tour

To the uninitiated it might look as though they’ve just plugged Vanessa straight into the mains. Not so! This is actually a rather clever poster and one of the more visually together specimens that I’ve encountered. It’s still fairly simple, but this is the main reason that it works so well. The designers have taken the name of the album that the tour is promoting and used it to bind the whole poster together in a big visual hit.
Storm is the theme and dramatic flashes of lightning crackle round Vanessa’s head, reinforcing that the tour is promoting this album. It also suggests the energy and excitement of the stage performance and is a reminder of Vanessa’s main instrument – the electric violin. Her hair is like wild violin strings crackling with the electric energy you can expect if you go to see her concert. She’s wearing a suitably ecstatic expression too, lost in her performance which, if the poster is anything to go by, should be quite spectacular.
The only thing I’m not sure about is the smaller images of Vanessa that cut across the background – I don’t think these are necessary – in fact they detract slightly from the impact of the main image. All in all though, it’s a very effective poster that does the job well – I just hope she lived up to it!
