The Darkness – Permission to Land
By JP Webber, Music on Posters editor.
In true Spinal Tap style, the Darkness present us with a naked
lady on the cover of their debut album which was bound to become
a poster too. There she stands, waving them in, unabashed in
her state of undress and about to be crushed by their logo.
The logo itself, you can be sure, is here to stay. Many bands choose a permanent logo, but it seems to be particularly prevalent among metal bands. The lettering and design will remain the same – I particularly like the little ‘devil’s tail’ on this one.
Permission to land has, I think, two main connotations in this context. The first and more innocent is that, as a new band, they are seeking approval of their first album – confirmation that they have ‘arrived’ on the scene, so to speak. If it were just a normal runway guy there guiding them in, then that would be about it.
By placing a naked woman there it moves the whole thing onto a different plane. Permission to land takes on a slightly sexual meaning and also attempts to give a bit of ‘rock kudos’ to the boys of the band. Sex and rock ‘n’ roll always go together, though thankfully there’s no sign of the drugs on this occasion.
