Snoop Dog – Beautiful

For me this represents a real departure from the normal presentation of artists
on rap posters. It’s still challenging, in its own way, but here it’s
not with a display of attitude or street cred. Rap posters are normally quite
aggressive and set the tone for what is likely to be the equally aggressive
music that they promote. They are also usually full of machismo, bulging
muscles and mean faces – any suggestion of the artistic or cerebral
is studiously avoided.
Here we have a close up photograph of Snoop’s face, his eyes closed. The suggestion is that he’s laid back and thinking beautiful thoughts, he’s calm and peaceful, a long way from the usual ‘mean streets’ territory. He’s not confronting us in any way either – or is he? A second interpretation might be that we’re being asked to consider the possibility that his face is beautiful. It’s quite an arty shot, carefully lit, and is being presented to us to appreciate as such. Is he trying to say that even though he’s a big, bad rap artist he can still be beautiful too? As usual, I’ll leave you to judge for yourself.
