Pink Floyd – The Wall
By JP Webber, Music on Posters editor.
One sure way of producing a classic poster is by getting a well
known illustrator to do it for you. The album ‘The Wall’ had
been released almost 10 years before the fall of the Berlin wall,
but Roger Waters couldn’t resist putting on a concert in
Berlin based on the album and used the services of Gerald Scarfe,
already well known for his satirical cartoons and portraits,
to produce the posters.

This is a long way from the simple band photo that we see in so many other concert posters. Pink Floyd were part of a wave of seventies bands who portrayed themselves as serious ‘artists’ who had a lot more to say and play than simple rock and roll. Their album covers and posters reflect this, often being works of art in themselves and adding to the general impression of gravitas.
When we look at this poster we know that something serious is being addressed – but at that time, in Berlin, not many clues were needed to interpret this image. It’s about the fall of the wall and Pink Floyd’s album The Wall coming together to create a special occasion, a meaningful concert marking a historic event – not many concerts can claim that.
