Britney Spears – Smiling.

Well, it's a little difficult to remember Britney looking like she does in this first poster. She must have been about fourteen when this picture was taken and undoubtedly still all that she claimed to be before her encounter with Mr Timberlake.
This is real teen stuff, the smiling, wholesome teenage role model that your parents wouldn't mind you becoming. Even politicians wouldn't have minded being seen with this Britney. It's also the classic pop poster pose - fairly close-up, straight into camera and very safe to display on the bedroom wall/door/ceiling or whatever. It's all about fresh-faced Britney, how adorable she is.
What a difference from todays version. That Justin has a lot to answer for! Now she's streetwise and sassy and looks like she's ready for anything that the record company bosses might throw at her.
Now she's aiming at the Madonna market, grown up pop consumers who require a more sophisticated - some may say less wholesome - image to go with their music. She's still looking straight to camera, but she's no longer smiling, just trying to look sultry and tempting. There also seems to be much more of a barrier between us and her than in the first poster - it's far less initmate.
She's now a packaged, stylised product of the industry who can't afford to look like anything other than she's supposed to. At least before you could still see the person - and she was smiling. Which one do you prefer?
