Axl Rose
By JP Webber, Music on Posters editor.
This image seems as highly cultivated as that of any pop star, yet somehow I’d always though of Axl as a bit of an individualist, what with his kilt and all. Here all the major metal elements are present – the long greasy hair, the tattoos, the headband, and the garish tank-top sporting something to do with some dark fantasy. The trouble is, we can’t see whether he’s wearing the kilt or not. In my opinion it would improve this poster no end.
I think that the publicity hounds had got to him for this one and told him he’d got to look like a conventional metal star which might help sell some albums to those less familiar with Guns & Roses. If any Black Sabbath fans had seen him parading about in a kilt that would have ended his metal credentials once and for all in their book – you wouldn’t catch Ozzy doing something as girlie as that in a million years.
On the other hand, it might have persuaded some Simon and Garfunkel fans that metal did have a feminine side after all and that Axl was at the vanguard of some sort of emancipated metal movement, not entirely devoted to male orientated hedonism. We’ll never know either way now of course, we’ll just have to make do with the top half of Axl in all its stereotyped glory.
